History of Porsche

Launched as an automotive consulting company in 1931, Porsche didn’t produce its own models in 1948. Ferry Porsche, son of founder Ferdinand Porsche, created a lightweight, smaller car that used its power efficiently with the 356. Since then, Porsche has developed a unique reputation for developing driver-focused, dramatically sculpted, powerful sports cars and, more recently, SUVs.

Shortly after Porsche released its first production car, the company entered into racing events. The iconic Porsche 356 included several sport-tuned variants that made it ideal for racing. Porsche then began developing dedicated racecars such as the 550, 719, RS, and RSK models.

The 911 was introduced as a racecar in 1963 and earned a victory in the Rally Monte Carlo. The 911 continued its racetrack success with victories at Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans throughout the 1970s.

Porsche scored its first 24 Hours of Le Mans success in 1970 and again in 1971 with the 917.

In addition to the on-track success, Porsche has also earned a reputation in rally racing with the 911, racking up several wins throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Company founder Ferdinand Porsche started his career developing Grand Prix cars in the 1920s and 1930s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that Porsche was recognized as a player in the Formula One circuit. Between 1984 and 1987, Porsche racked up 25 victories in F1 competition.

More recently, Porsche earned back-to-back FIA World Endurance Championship wins in 2015 and 2016. The team is currently
